Culminating - 30% of your Final Mark

Culminating Assignment

This is it! This is the final assignment that you will be completing for this semester's yearbook class. This assignment is involved and will require a lot of planning and well thought-out processes in order to execute properly. Please utilize class time appropriately - as well, the benefit of using the online Friesen's software is work can be completed on your own computers and at home.

EXAMPLES OF THIS YEAR'S YEARBOOK PAGES CAN BE FOUND IN THE .docx FILE BELOW. Please use this as a guide to follow to create your own page.

This year's theme is: 2020 Vision and consists of
  • Bright Colours
  • Rounded Edges (No Harsh rectangles)
  • Circles in the Background
  • Simple Backgrounds
  • Clean Lines
  • Grid Pattern (No random placement of images)

The bokeh_balls.abr file below is a brush I made where you can download and use for yourself. It will allow you to create the rounded shapes in the background. Check out the tutorial video below on how to import the brushes onto your computer as well as manipulate them for use on your pages.

  • A variety of portrait and candids  ( 12-16) are required for each page to create a successful yearbook page.
    • Try to find out the names of individuals in every photo you choose for your final layout to use as captions, headlines if we decide.
    • Once your photos have been taken – they are to be manipulated in Photopea (this includes photo specifications, image adjustment and creative technique) so that they are yearbook ready.
    • Any creative technique is done at this time

REMEMBER WE USE CMYK COLOUR - NOT RGB!
  • This means a colour you choose for your layouts may need to be changed slightly to follow printing regulations at the Friesen's plant.

Step 2: Sign up for one of the pages

We are going to offer 5 possible pages for you to create for this year's yearbook. Remember that you may be in competition with your classmates for a spot so put in as much effort as you can!

Sign up for the pages by commenting below the page you wish to create. I will then share a folder with images you will need to complete the work.

Please Note: All are Double Page Spreads

Anti-Bullying

Arts Showcase

Christmas Concert

Junior Semiformal

Tulip Planting/Cross Carrying

Step 3: Final Layout Submission

Your layout should be an ongoing creation from the moment your Plan of Action has been developed.

Your page must have all of the appropriate criteria for a yearbook page:
  • margins, gutter space, etc.
  • It must follow the rules of layout and make sure all pages are linked with your photos
  • Must follow all principles and elements of design if necessary
  • Layout guidelines specified in class (Make sure you are sticking to the Title Safe, Action Safe, Bleed Line rules as well as utilize the templates posted here for reference of sizing)
  • Effective use of colour ( grayscale, spot or full colour)
  • Typography guidelines and rules.

Make sure to adhere to the following photo when using the provided template.

Helpful Hints

I hope to continually add to this section as we go through this culminating process together - however here are a few reminders to assist you and act as reference when working on your culminating.
School Colour Codes:

BLUE   - C: 100    M: 18    Y: 0    K: 65
GREEN -C: 86      M: 30   Y: 77   K: 16
WHITE - C: 0       M:0      Y:0      K:0
BLACK - C: 0      M: 0      Y:0      K:100

Use the following Resolution in Photoshop when creating new documents.
300 Pixels/Inch

Try to use the Dominant Photo Technique and caption in your spreads if possible - this looks more professional and aesthetically pleasing instead of a bunch of pictures. Dominant Photo Techniques displays a large photo which you want to call the most attention to, and then it is surrounded/aided by many smaller photos to assist in telling the remainder of the story.

Don't forget about your backgrounds! They are just as important as the photos and styles you choose. (Simple colours, gradients, patterns, etc.)
