Culminating Assignment
This is it! This is the final assignment that you will be completing for this semester's yearbook class. This assignment is involved and will require a lot of planning and well thought-out processes in order to execute properly. Please utilize class time appropriately - as well, the benefit of using the online Friesen's software is work can be completed on your own computers and at home.
Step 1: Plan of Action
- Once your pages have been assigned - Your research portion of this task is to contact the appropriate individuals with pertinent information for your task. These individuals will be interviewed before your culminating project is due. This will be the written component of your page.
- What do you mean interview?
- Yearbook's consist mainly of photo and copy to tell their story - currently, you as a designer have no inside knowledge of that particular club or team or event. You must do the legwork of interviewing possibly the teacher/supervisor of the club/team or even a team captain for example in order to gain more knowledge about the event so we can include this information in the yearbook.
- Don't be lazy! Everyone in the school is going to see your work when it is completed!
- Your written component will also include the following:
- appropriate and creative headlines
- a possible mock up layout
- captions and team /club rosters if necessary.
- Individuals on your pages must be identified (Club and Team photos can be printed and given to teachers/coaches and request they identify the individuals in the photos).
- Correct grammar and spelling is not only expected - it is mandatory!
Note: Don't hesitate to reference previous yearbooks as well as view a Photoshop Tutorial on Youtube or a forum online if you need help building something complicated in Photoshop. It is nearly impossible to remember all of the commands and executions in Photoshop - textbooks are usually 500+ pages! Tutorials are an excellent resource for you so please use them!
Photos will be placed on a common drive for easy access by everyone - this will be decided upon in class. However, please create a folder within your H: Drive and title it "Yearbook Culminating" in order to store your information you gather as well as any photos and Photoshop documents you may be creating.
Complete ONE planning sheet FOR EACH page you are completing for this yearbook. Click the link below to view the document.

Step 2: Photo Assignment
If you are fortunate enough to land on a yearbook spread in which all of your photos are already taken, then lucky you. If not, then expect to go out and capture more photos if necessary!
REMEMBER WE USE CMYK COLOUR - NOT RGB!!
- A variety of portrait and candids ( 12-16) are required for each page to be taken and manipulated in Photoshop if necessary, and fitted to the requirements of the page.
- Try to find out the names of individuals in every photo you choose for your final layout to use as captions, headlines if we decide.
- Once your photos have been taken – they are to be manipulated in Photoshop (this includes photo specifications, image adjustment and creative technique) so that they are yearbook ready.
- Any creative technique is done at this time

Step 3: Final Layout Submission
Your layout should be an ongoing creation from the moment your Plan of Action has been developed.
Your page must have all of the appropriate criteria for a yearbook page:
Your page must have all of the appropriate criteria for a yearbook page:
- margins, gutter space, etc.
- It must follow the rules of layout and make sure all pages are linked with your photos
- Must follow all principles and elements of design if necessary
- Layout guidelines specified in class (Make sure you are sticking to the Title Safe, Action Safe, Bleed Line rules as well as utilize the templates posted here for reference of sizing)
- Effective use of colour ( grayscale, spot or full colour)
- Typography guidelines and rules.
Step 4: Gallery Walk
Hopefully you will be able to effectively complete steps 1-3 in 2 weeks. I would then like to host a 'Gallery Walk' in which we can all provide feedback on each other's work with possible constructive improvements to be suggested.
Do not think of this is an opportunity to hate on someone's work - rather an opportunity for improvement. Make sure you are identifying potential problems or concerns with the requirements and criteria listed above such as typography, margins, colours, etc.
