e. Day of the Dead Portrait Assignment

Transform a photo into a Day of the Dead Portrait

Picture
The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico where the day is a public holiday. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honouring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds,
the favourite foods and beverages of the departed, and face painting (or masks). The most common design is to paint the face to resemble a skull. For people not familiar with Latin American culture and the celebration of the day of the dead, this might seem strange and even scary. However, the skull has a uniquely positive meaning in Dia de los Muertos, very different from the skeletons and ghosts of Halloween. Check out more examples at the end of this assignment sheet.

Using the tools from Photoshop CC, transform a Selfie into a Day of the Dead portrait.
