What makes a striking photo? Often, it's merely ordinary things composed in an ordinary manner. That's because they always tend to have a single theme or idea, and because clutter is kept to a minimum. They are simple, true, and sincere. Today we're looking at the elements of design (line, shape, form, texture, colour etc) that can turn a simple subject into a striking photo.

Successful photos rely on order, and the main elements that bring and emphasize order in a composition are: line, shape, form, texture, pattern, and colour. Every photograph, intentionally or not, contains one or more of these elements, which are known as the elements of design.

All of these elements have a huge impact on a photo, especially the line, texture, and colour. Usually we recognize and utilize these elements unconsciously. This depends on the individual's sensitivity to the different visual components out there, and is very much affected by the person's memories and life experiences that are registered on their own personal mind tape.

Your Task...

Use the internet to do some research and create a 3-column document in Word/Google Doc.

On the left, write one of the elements of design and a brief explanation of what it means, and in the middle, you must shoot 2 examples of that element. You MUST take new photos for this assignment!

Once that is complete, briefly explain how the image you photographed relates to the element discussed in class - be specific and mention colours, patterns or other identifying information that will help your case.

Do this for all 6 elements: Line, Shape, Form, Colour, Texture, Space

Sum up:
- 3 column document

Far left Column:
- Element along with its description

Middle Column:
- 2 examples that you photographed.

Far right Column:
- Briefly explain how the images you shot relate to that specific element of design.
