​Text and Dimensions

Creating Text Styles

In order to create any sort of annotation or other information on to a drawing you must first set up a Text Style.

This is done by accessing your Text Styles button which is located within your Annotation Palette.

To the right is an image of what the Text Styles button looks like in the Annotation Palette.

Clicking on the Text Styles button will bring up the Text Styles window (See Below)

To Create a new Text Style:

Adding Text

Adding Text is easy! Follow these steps! Click the Text Icon located in your Annotation palette.

Setting up Dimension Styles

Just like setting up text you will need to set up and Dimension style.

The Dimension Style Manager is activated by clicking on the Icon also located in the Annotate palette.

Clicking on the Dimension Styles button will bring up the Dimension Style Manager (See below)

Here you can create new dimension styles, modify existing styles and also compare two different styles

To create a new style simply click the New Button.

The next few steps explain how to set up your dimensions. Follow these steps and you'll be dimensioning in no time!
First, let's set up our Lines for our dimension strings

Ensure the following:
  • Extend beyond dim lines: 0'-1/4"
  • Offset from origin: 0'-1/4"

Now let's set up our Symbols and Arrows
Ensure the Following:
  • All your arrows are close filled.
  • Arrow size is 0’-1/4”
  • Center Marks are 0’-1/4” and set to Mark
  • All other option leave by default.

Now let's set up our Text!
Note: make sure you set up your text for dimensioning prior to this stage of you will have to make a trip back here later!
Ensure the following:
  • Set your Text style to the style you created for dimensioning.
  • Set Text Height to 0’-1/8”
  • Set Text placement to:
    • Vertical: Above
    • Horizontal: Centered
  • Offset from dim line to 0’-1/8”
  • And text alignment to: Alignment with dimension line

Now let's set up our Fit
These are settings that are used to set scale of dimensions when dimensioning in model space.
For this window leave the settings to the default. And ensure the overall scale is 1.

If you're settings differ from these please made the changes to these settings provided.

Setting up Primary Units
This is where you set the units or measurements for your dimensions.
Set:
  • Unit format: Architectural
  • Precision: 1/4”
  • Fraction Format: Horizontal
  • Round off: 0”
Leave all other settings at default.

Now you're ready to start dimensioning!

Tips for Dimensioning:
  • When in paper space always SNAP to a line when dimensioning. Otherwise you will not get a dimension to the right scale of the object.
  • When dimension strings are placed one above another ensure there is a sufficient distance between the strings.
  • Always avoid crossing dimension strings/lines.
  • Do not dimension something twice.
